This fashionable historic café, often referred to as the café without doors, has been a Padua landmark since the 19th century and today is still very much a part of the social heart of the city. Commissioned by a famous coffee maker, Antonio Pedrocchi, and designed by Venetian architect Giuseppe Jappelli in 1831, the neoclassical café has been an important gathering place for intellectuals over the years, including Eleonora Duse, Luigi Barzini and Stendhal.
The grand café was the site of a student uprising in 1848 and its piano nobile is used for lectures, concerts and exhibitions. Its rooms are decorated in various styles, including Egyptian, Roman, Greek, and Etruscan. There is also a ballroom dedicated to the architect’s friend, Rossini. The café is a chic place to see and be seen with a prosecco or espresso in hand and occasionally it hosts live musical events.
